Bluetooth Hearing Aids

The technology of hearing aids has made significant progress over the years, and the integration of Bluetooth technology has opened up a whole new world for individuals with hearing impairments. Bluetooth technology is now accessible at both basic and advanced levels of hearing aid technology, so anyone with a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or compatible accessories can take advantage of this innovation. Bluetooth hearing aids can be linked to a variety of devices, offering numerous benefits.

Wireless Connectivity

With the help of Bluetooth technology, hearing aids can effortlessly connect to a range of compatible devices like smartphones, tablets, televisions, and computers. This wireless connectivity allows for direct streaming of phone calls, music, podcasts, and various audio content, resulting in a more engaging and customized listening experience.

Hands-Free Communication

Bluetooth hearing aids provide a convenient way to engage in hands-free phone conversations by connecting wirelessly to your smartphone. This eliminates the need to hold the phone to your ear, allowing for effortless and clear communication, even in noisy surroundings.

Types of Bluetooth connections

There are primarily two types of Bluetooth connection protocols used in hearing aids:

  • Classic Bluetooth: Classic Bluetooth, also known as Bluetooth Basic Rate/Enhanced Data Rate (BR/EDR), is the traditional Bluetooth protocol. It allows for wireless connectivity between hearing aids and various devices like smartphones, tablets, and computers. Classic Bluetooth is commonly used for phone call streaming, music streaming, and other audio content.

  • Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE): Bluetooth Low Energy is a power-efficient variant of Bluetooth technology. These are primarily known as “made for iPhone” (MFI) - Apple iPhones & “Audio Streaming for Hearing Aids” (ASHA) - Android Phones. It is primarily used for connecting hearing aids to other low-power devices, such as remote controls, assistive listening devices, and smartphone apps. BLE enables hearing aids to communicate with these devices while minimizing battery drain, making it suitable for continuous use.

Both classic Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy play important roles in facilitating connectivity and communication between hearing aids and external devices, providing users with a seamless and personalized hearing experience.

Customisable Settings

Bluetooth-enabled hearing aids often come with smartphone apps that provide control and customization options. Users can adjust volume, change programs, and fine-tune settings for different listening environments, all from the convenience of their mobile devices.

Here are some of the helpful customisations users can make.

  • Directionality of the microphone

  • The sharpness of sounds - some provide parametric equaliser

Visualisation of Settings

Smartphone apps have made it effortless for hearing aid users to visualize their device settings. With this feature, users can avoid the possibility of mistakenly selecting incorrect manual settings when a dedicated manual setting is needed.

Here are the list of information hearing aid apps can provide.

  • Check the battery charge status

  • Some will help to find the lost hearing aids

  • Some will monitor your health, like heart rate, pedometer and fall detection and more
