Hearing Assessment for Paediatric

Hearing Assessment & Test for Children in Auckland

Paediatric hearing assessment is a series of tests performed to evaluate the hearing ability of children, including infants and young children. Natural Hearing offers hearing tests for children in Auckland, NZ. The tests used in a paediatric hearing assessment can include as below.

It is important to note that the type of test used will depend on the age, developmental level, and cooperation of the child.

Our experienced audiologist will interpret the results to determine the nature and extent of the hearing loss, if any and make appropriate management.

  • Visual observation of ear canal and tympanic membrane (ear drum) using an otoscope or video otoscope if needed or requested

  • Play audiometry measures the quietest sound a child can perceive (Threshold) through a game-based test. Based on the combined results from Air and Bone Conduction (AC/BC) testing, we can determine the degree and likelihood of permanent or temporary hearing loss.

  • Speech test measures how well a person can hear speech. This test is particularly important for hearing rehabilitation through hearing aid as it measures integrity of hearing nerve. Poor hearing nerve function leads to sound distortion.

  • This test is divided into two parts

Tympanometry measures the movement of the eardrum in response to changes in air pressure, which is applied safely.

Acoustic reflex testing involves playing loud noises to check part of the hearing nerve function. We do not conduct this test for people experiencing tinnitus and hyperacusis/noise sensitivity

  • Using DPOAEs, we can objectively assess your child’s hearing. It involves playing two sounds in a special arrangement, which creates measurable responses from the hearing organ. This testing can be conducted for any age group.

  • Based on the results, we provide

A detailed explanation of the hearing

Management plan - Monitor or recommend hearing rehabilitation
